Summary

Thomas, 4 months old, clearly enjoys it when music is playing or when I sing to him. He smiles, waves his arms, and makes eye contact. When he's on the changing table to be changed, I take his hands and sing "Clap Your Hands" to him. I mimic the accompanying hand movements. I enunciate the words clearly and sing slowly to give Thomas the opportunity to process all the stimuli he's receiving. When the song ends, I get a big smile from Thomas and give him a hug.
Karlijn, 3 months old, usually has a crying spell at the end of the day. A day is probably just a bit too long for her. She gets a lot of impressions between her naps and feedings, and by about five o'clock, she doesn't really know how to entertain herself anymore. She prefers to be carried, and I walk around the room with her in my arms. I tell her that I can tell she's tired and doesn't really know how to entertain herself anymore. Karlijn whines a little and rests her head on my shoulder. I continue doing the necessary things while holding Karlijn in my arms. When I feel her breathing calmer and leaning a little more heavily on my shoulder, I gently place her in the hammock. I speak softly to her and let the hammock rock her. Karlijn falls asleep.

Aïsha, 10 months old, crawls back and forth in the room, and I get down on my hands and knees. I bring my hands down extra hard on the floor as I crawl toward her. "I'm going to get you!" I say, drumming my hands on the floor a few times. Aïsha giggles and turns away from me to crawl away. I follow her, and when I'm right behind her, I quickly and hard slam my hands on the floor a few times. I hear her howl with laughter, and she sits on her bottom. She turns around and sees that I'm very close. Then she quickly turns away again and takes off like a rocket. She crawls behind the couch and hides under the table. I ask out loud where she's gone and crawl back and forth a bit. Then she gives herself away by giggling, and I quickly crawl to the table. When I'm close to her, I tap her foot before she runs off again.
