Grimm's: building with colour and shape

Grimm's is known for wooden rainbows and building shapes that can be used in different ways. The same arch might be a tunnel or part of a tall construction. The collection extends beyond wood to play silks, glitter stones and decorative accessories.

Open-ended play with arches and blocks

Open-ended play means the final result is not decided in advance. Grimm's shapes offer ways to create without prescribing one construction. An arch might become a passage through a town. Blocks beside it become a house, while a play cloth forms the river running through the town. The child decides what the pieces mean.

Building involves trying and adjusting. If a block is unstable, a child can turn it, make a wider base or lower the structure. Differences in shape, weight and support become visible through play. A construction falling over is not a wrong answer to an assignment: it offers another opportunity to investigate what works.

The same material in another game

One time, play might focus on sorting colours or nesting arches. Another time, the same pieces become a landscape through which figures travel. Separate building boards and semicircles can add floors to a construction. They do not determine what the building must represent.

Not every game needs to be large or last a long time. A few suitable pieces on a clear surface can be enough to begin. An adult can follow what the child is doing, perhaps by asking about the story behind a building. An example may inspire, but it need not be copied exactly. That leaves room for an individual solution.

Materials with different purposes

Wooden building pieces have a different rigidity and surface from flowing play silk. Decorative figures, brass candle holders and beeswax candles have another intended use. Consider materials and instructions by product group, rather than treating the entire brand alike.

• Blocks and arches. The large block pyramid contains building pieces that can be rearranged. Rainbows, bridges and other building shapes are also included.
• Play scenes. Grimm's play silk can represent water, scenery or a cloth in play. Glitter stones add small coloured pieces.
• Decoration. Holders, candles and decorative figures are intended for matching arrangements. Not every decorative accessory is a toy.

Use and care

Compare dimensions and age guidance when combining sets. Small pieces have different usage requirements from large blocks. Clean wood gently without soaking; care for textiles according to their labels. Candles and holders require adult use.
